CONDO OWNERS LEFT OUT IN THE COLD BY ASSESSMENT CAP PROGRAM
February 2, 2005
Halifax – Michele Raymond, NDP MLA for Halifax Atlantic and NDP Municipal Relations Critic, has written to the Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, Barry Barnet, asking that the province’s assessment cap program be extended to condominium owners.
“It’s not only people who own houses who have 40% assessment increases, says Raymond.
“Unlike other homeowners across the province, condo owners have no protection against extreme increases in their assessments.
“NDP Caucus members are hearing from condo owners that their assessment increases are as high as other outrageous ones being reported in the media.
Condominiums and other concentrated developments, like mobile or mini home developments, are not currently covered by the provincial assessment cap program. Changes to the type of dwelling covered by the legislation can be implemented by cabinet, without having to make changes to the legislation.
“Condo owners have the same financial challenges as other homeowners. They could be retired and on a fixed income, or just starting out and have bought a condo for their first home.
“These developments actually place less of a burden on municipal and provincial infrastructure. Condo owners are paying more and getting less.
“No one should be penalized for the type of home they choose to live in.
