Halifax – Halifax Atlantic MLA, and NDP critic for Municipal Affairs, Michele Raymond is calling for an immediate increase in police visibility in the Spryfield area of her constituency.
“The population in Spryfield has increased, say Raymond. “And with that comes crime. Policing needs to keep pace with our rate of growth and development.
“The time to act is now. An attempted rape of a young girl two days ago, and an attempted murder, are telling us this, loud and clear.
“Policing is an essential service and it’s a cost of development.
Raymond has talked to the Halifax Regional Municipality about the sudden increase in crime in her area. She points out that until the increase in residential development, the crime rates in Spryfield were going down. She sees the recent rash of violent crime as strictly the result of population growing more rapidly than the police resources, and that the solution to the problem, a permanent police presence, is clear.
“This is a great community, one I am really proud of, but families have to feel safe.
Raymond points out that the spot where a man was shot in the chest on the Herring Cove last night was only feet away form the site of a fatal shooting three months ago.
“If we don’t get a permanent police office, people won’t feel safe to walk the streets at night anymore. We can’t let that happen.
