Halifax – Michele Raymond, NDP MLA for Halifax Atlantic, is working to bring local food to local people. On Wednesday, February 21st, she will prepare February’s ‘Spry Cafe’ meal at Spryfield’s Single Parent Centre,
using Nova Scotia pork.
“I was wondering what to cook, until I realized struggling NS pork producers needed a boost, says Raymond.
“I don’t want to see Nova Scotia farmers driven out of business because big grocery chains find it easier to deal in huge quantities of food, driven to us from thousands of miles away. I hope this Spry Cafe gives a few more people the chance to appreciate Nova Scotia food, and what it means, for us and for our environment.”
About 50 local residents will attend the meal, dining on butternut squash soup, roast pork, boiled potatoes, stewed red cabbage and apples, and gingered spinach.
Raymond, who founded Spryfield’s Urban Farm Museum Society in 1996, has a longstanding interest in nutrition, heritage and food security.
“Spryfield was established as a farming community nearly 250 years ago,” says Raymond. “But as the urban shadow lengthened, a lot of traditional skills were lost. It has taken a toll on the health of our communities, physically, financially and environmentally.”
“Here in Nova Scotia, when it comes to food, we have a healthy heritage. Let’s not throw it away.”
