Halifax – NDP Human Rights Act Critic and MLA for Halifax Atlantic, Michele Raymond, says the Nova Scotia government is failing same sex couples by denying their legal rights.
“The NDP will bring forward legislation in the Fall to correct this situation,” says Raymond. “For Nova Scotia, a province that legalized same-sex marriage in 2005, this obvious denial of equal rights is embarrassing.”
Raymond says she is hearing of too many same-sex couples being denied rights as couples and as parents.
“One member of a same-sex couple having to adopt the child for legal rights as a parent is absurd. Maternity leave benefits being denied to both members of a same-sex couple. These injustices have to be stopped,” says Raymond. “What good was legalizing same-sex marriage if the government continues to deny legal rights and put barriers in front of these families?”
Raymond is encouraging the provincial government to review all relevant legislation and bring forward any further amendments required to update laws affecting couples and their children.
