Halifax – NDP Tourism and Culture Critic, Michele Raymond, today asked the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, Murray Scott, how the Conservatives can justify allowing Nova Scotia roads to deteriorate so badly during their nine years in power.
“Many of the roads that access our tourist attractions are in terrible shape and getting progressively worse,” says Raymond. “A critical part of marketing our province as a tourist destination is making sure travelers have a safe and pleasant experience.”
Raymond says the Joggins Fossil Cliffs Interpretive Centre is Nova Scotia’s newest attraction and the community is to be congratulated on its hard work making that dream a reality.
“By the time you finish driving some of the roads to the fossil centre, the rattled bones won’t be limited to those found in the display cases,” says Raymond. “With all the talk about Gateways, when will the Conservative government realize that our secondary roadways are, in fact, the gateways to our rural communities and attractions?”
Many tourism operators, and the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia, have identified roads as a major challenge for the industry.
“Tourism has huge potential, especially for rural communities, but people have to be able to get these destinations safely,” says Raymond. “When will this government stop playing politics with paving and consider the economic factors such as tourism when making road construction decision?”
