Halifax, NS – Halifax Atlantic MLA Michele Raymond called upon the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Rodney MacDonald, to explain why his government has neglected the opportunity to acquire lighthouses in coastal communities around the province during Wednesday’s Question Period.
“This government has been afforded time to consider acquiring lighthouses being divested by the Coast Guard. The deadline has been extended several times, but this government has still not responded.”
“Why has this government not responded to the federal government?” Raymond asked.
“Many lighthouses occupy the most prominent, scenic points of the coastline. Nova Scotia communities fear they will not be able to keep the lighthouse properties in their own hands.”
“There are groups that are concerned about the condition of Nova Scotia’s lighthouses and they want to help local communities preserve their own lighthouses.”
“Why has this Minister not sought their expertise and advice in its negotiations with the Coast Guard?”
