Halifax – NDP Tourism and Culture Critic, Michele Raymond, today asked the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage, Bill Dooks, when his department will do more than pay lip service to the publishing industry in Nova Scotia.
“The word publishing doesn’t appear anywhere in the Tourism, Culture and Heritage 2008-09 business plan,” says Raymond. “Not one mention of this industry that is so important to preserving our culture and heritage.”
Raymond tabled an article today in the Legislature featured in Atlantic Books Today titled ‘Life Support for Atlantic Publishing.’ The article discusses the challenges facing the publishing industry, including the loss of two independent book stores in Halifax in the last year.
“Our stories are important and they need to be told, and Nova Scotia’s authors have a difficult time getting published by Toronto companies,” says Raymond. “Why hasn’t the Conservative government offered more support to our publishing sector?”
The article tabled quotes Dan Soucoup of Nimbus Publishing. It says ‘What we really need … is greater vision and leadership at all levels of government to allow for more funding from the public sector,” says Raymond. “Our writers are well regarded around the world. When will we give our own authors the respect everyone else does? Where is the public sector support to ensure Nova Scotia stories continue to get told?”
