Halifax – NDP Tourism and Culture Critic, Michele Raymond, is pleased all members of the House of Assembly today supported her resolution calling on the Province of Nova Scotia to designate Louisbourg as a World Heritage Site under UNESCO.
“It is very fitting to have the legislature support this resolution,” says Raymond. “The French/British struggle over the new continent was largely determined at Louisbourg and next year will mark the 250th anniversary of the second, and final siege of 1758.”
Raymond’s resolution notes the Fortress of Louisbourg was built by France in 1713 to counter the British threat in the New World after the Treaty of Utrecht ceded Acadie to the British.
“Louisbourg, at the mouth of the Gulf of Saint Laurence, defended the sea road into the heart of North America,” says Raymond. “After 250 years, this province should take this resolution to the next step by ensuring this historic Nova Scotia site receives the global recognition it deserves.”
