Halifax – NDP Tourism, Culture & Heritage Critic, Michele Raymond, today introduced legislation that would reinstate the Arts Council that Premier MacDonald shut down when he was Tourism and Culture Minister in 2002.
“We are calling on the government to reinstate something that was taken apart,” said Raymond. “People in the arts community feel they are not heard and re-opening this arms-length council would be giving them back their voice.”
For five years the NDP has fought to have the council, which was replaced with a government affiliated arts and culture entity, returned. This has forced the two allied groups to fight over the same pot of money, however, what the government has failed to recognize is that the two communities are united and will not be divided.
“Taking apart this council was wrong then and it is still wrong now,” says Raymond. “The arts community are not giving up and the NDP are not giving up either.”
“It’s time for the government to admit it has made a mistake and reinstate the Arts Council of Nova Scotia,” says Raymond.
