Halifax – NDP Environment Critic and MLA for Halifax Atlantic, Michele Raymond, today asked the Minister of Environment and Labour, Mark Parent, in light of his government’s green shift, why is he even considering allowing the burning of tires in Nova Scotia.
“If this Minister was serious about protecting the environment, he wouldn’t even be considering the proposal to burn tires in a cement kiln, says Raymond. “Whether or not we sign on to protocols, whether or not we declare emissions targets, is meaningless if we don’t do the work.
On April 4th, the Ontario Environmental Review Tribunal found that the emissions from burning tires at Lafarge are potentially hazardous to the environment and human health.
“If Nova Scotia wants to be a leader on the environmental stage, this Minister should be speaking loud and clear saying tires won’t burn in Nova Scotia, says Raymond. “This Minister’s current plan does little to show Nova Scotia is serious about the environment.
Raymond says the decision of the Ontario Environmental Review tribunal shows that projects such as burning tires in a cement kiln must face extreme scrutiny.
“If we do not start protecting the air we breathe, we will see a continued rise in air eleated illnesses and our environment will continue to degrade, says Raymond. “When will this Minister get serious about protecting the air we all breathe?
