Halifax – NDP Environment Critic Michele Raymond is calling on the Minister of Environment and Labour to do the right thing now and make a commitment to protect the Digby Neck and Islands from potentially disastrous plans to build a mega-quarry and shipping terminal at White’s Point.
“The Minister is hiding behind the Joint Panel Review that is taking place at the moment, saying he can’t make a decision until the Panel Report is submitted says Raymond.
“But everyone knows that Joint Panel Reviews don’t prevent mega-quarries – Ministers of the Environment have the final say. I am calling on Minister Mark Parent to make a commitment to the people of Digby County that there will be no mega-quarry and terminal at White’s Point.
Michele Raymond was speaking today after a press conference held by concerned groups who are fighting the proposed mega-quarry.
“Bilcon wants to blast 2 million tonnes of rock a year out of this fragile eco-system, and ship it south, through important lobster fisheries and whale feeding grounds in the Bay of Fundy. If this wasn’t bad enough, the establishment of terminal at White’s Point increases the potential for this type of quarrying all the way up the Annapolis Valley.
“When is this government going to show it is committed to ending the ongoing degradation of our environment? When is it going to protect our valuable fisheries, our tourism sector and our quality of life?
